Doctor dies in Underberg tent tragedy

By Heinz de Boer

Mother Nature struck a blow in Underberg on Sunday, when much loved community doctor Les Pitt was killed as high winds caused a marquee to collapse on to spectators at an agricultural show.

The tight-knit community was still in shock on Monday morning.

Several children were slightly injured, with one girl suffering broken bones after the massive tent toppled in the agricultural town.

Pitt, who was hailed for his selfless community work and leadership in an ARV programme, was struck by a tent pole and later died on the way to hospital.

Underberg Farmers' Association secretary Denise Dyson said children were parading with their favourite farm animals when the tent collapsed.
Tributes for Pitt and those of the community who tried to save him continue to pour in.

"It was absolutely terrible. The children were actually busy parading when the tent came down and we are lucky that more people were not injured.

"For the community this has been a tragedy. Pitt was one of the nicest, most approachable people in the world," Dyson said.

Underberg resident Ann Weaver, who had left the tent just minutes before it collapsed, said Pitt would be sorely missed.

"He was a much loved member of the community and did big work with ARVs. He was a dear man," Weaver said.
