Program for the November 17th Meeting:

Our guest speaker was Johanna Beers, a recent graduate of Skidmore College and Trinity College in Ireland.  Johanna was a Rotary Ambassadorial scholar who was chosen in the summer of 2006.  Although the application process was extensive, Johanna was interested in graduate school and loved the mission of the Rotary Ambassador Scholarship program, which aims to teach students of all countries to respect cultural differences, serve others before self, and improve the quality of life at home and abroad by understanding different cultures.

Johanna completed a 1 year master’s degree at Trinity College in Ethnic Studies.  She studied with American, European and Irish students.  She was charged with examining cultural differences in the business world.  In general, Americans tend to be very direct and goal-oriented, while Europeans tend to communicate less directly and place a priority on establishing relationships.

Currently Johanna is seeking a job where she can use her newly developed skills to help a company or organization better understand that we are all interconnected, and that cross-cultural relationships can strengthen teams and increase productivity.
