There were many visitarians this week, including:

Reverend Ken Steigler

Frank Murphy of Marblehead Harbor Rotary attended and brought a guest

Juli Lederhaus brought a guest, Kristi Pohler, who also works at the Hawthorne Hotel

Malia Griffin brought 2 guests, her second mothers, Liz Fleming and Pat Moran

Denise Flynn brought guest, Bob Dionne

Roberta Cantor brought Susan

John Neely discussed the Ambassadorial Scholars program – it looks like Salem might be sending three students outbound and our club would host two students here.

Anita Blackaby was made a full fledged Rotarian and received her permanent badge.  Lots of Rotarians paid a fine for the privilege of meeting Anita.

President Dave enjoyed the recent RYLA meeting and thanked Liz Bradt for attending.

Trip Mason had fun with his older son.

Dave Benson was recognized in the Salem News.

Liz Bradt recognized herself for pursuing continuing education for Rotary via the RYLA program.

Ray Hodge enjoyed a trip to Lake Tahoe.

Juli Lederhaus is paying in advance for her 34th wedding anniversary.

Jane Stirgwolt graciously received funds from Rev. Steigler to recognize her in-laws who are celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary.  Her father-in-law is so spry that he took a tumble on his skis and continued skiing.

Rich Eisner played cards with a few fellow Rotarians – 3 of the players made money and 3 didn’t.  He’s not naming names, but he gave everything to Sergeant in Arms Viktoria Talebian.

Bill Kielbasa donated the money that he would have lost if he were playing.  He also enjoyed a recent trip to Disney and to Universal Studios.  He’s hoping that Rotarians can continue to sell calendars.

Program for the January 6th Meeting:

Sandy Barry, aka Brunonia Barry, was introduced by Juli Lederhaus.  Sandy was born and raised in Marblehead, later attended Green Mountain College, and studied screenwriting at NYU.  She lived for nearly a decade in Hollywood, ran an innovative logic puzzle company, has written stories and screenplays, and has worked as a production assistant.

She lives in Salem with her husband and their “only child,” a 12 year old golden retriever.  Sandy returned to this area to care for her aging parents.  She was struck by the history and charm of Salem and the North Shore and was inspired to write the ‘The Lace Reader,’ after she arrived here and found an old swatch of lace from her grandmother’s attic.

In short, the protagonist reads lace in her Salem tea room – the gift of reading lace can be both a blessing and a curse.  The theme of the book is a hero’s journey for women, sisters, daughters and mothers.

It took Sandy many years to write the book.  Her husband wanted to self-publish the book, which they did and finally a PR company, Kelly & Hall got them reviewed and the rest is history – or “herstory.”  Now the book is being translated into 25 languages and there is discussion about a possible movie deal.

Sandy’s parting words were, “stay with your dreams.”
