Bruce Whear’s son had the 6th fastest time in the state in the 100 meter butterfly.

Jake Segal went to Cuba with his wife and two of his children.  He said that he certainly gained an appreciation that difficult times here don’t come anywhere near the difficulties experienced there.

Program for the February 24th Meeting:

Today’s program was a tribute to John Hooper.  In attendance at the meeting were four PDG’s:  Bill Adams, Gene Hastings, Bud Curtis and Karen Babbin.  Also in attendance were members of John’s family:  Joan (his lovely “bride” of 57 years); his children, Sarah, George and Jefferson; and, his daughters-in-law, Jane and Susan.

John Hooper joined Salem Rotary in 1965 and is a Past President of the club, a Past District Governor of District 6630, has received four Paul Harris Fellowships, and has had perfect attendance for the past 22 years.

There were many who stood to pay tribute to Hoop.

Denise Flynn recalled how John loved to tell blonde jokes, and how those jokes helped Denise form a friendship with Sandy Heaphy.  But more importantly, Denise came to know John through her work with the hospital, and how Hoop would always follow through on his promises.  She recalls how he’d say that he didn’t mind being at the hospital, since it gave him the opportunity to meet new and interesting people.

Dick Lutts first met Hoop in 1960 when he went to work with him at the Salem Laundry, and they worked together for 30 years.  Dick talked about a tradition that they had of canoeing down the Ipswich River on Memorial Day – something that they did for 42 years in a row.  Over the years, probably 400-500 people participated in one of these outings – however most only did it once.

John Fisher noted how John has slept through more speakers than anyone in Rotary history.  When Hoop returned from attending the international conference in Japan, he said that he’d only fell asleep twice during his own presentation.  On a serious note, when Hoop told John that he wouldn’t be coming to meetings in the future, John said that to him Hoop will always be at Rotary.

PDG Gene Hastings was DGE the year that Hoop was the DG, which meant that both Gene and Hoop attended meetings at every club during that year.  Hoop would always insist that they use his car, and he would follow routes through more back streets to get those meetings – which coincidentally took them by many of Hoop’s laundromats.  On the other hand, Gene learned everything that there was to know about being a DG from Hoop.  Hoop was instrumental in getting the District’s first website online, and his map of instructions on how to get to various meetings was thorough and meticulous.

Rob Lutts got his first job with Hoop – pulling sheets on the top floor of the laundry building at the age of 15.  He said that one summer of doing that convinced him that he really, really wanted to go to college.  Rob also opened up his first office in the Salem Laundry building, paying $100 a month which not only included the space but also the use of the company receptionist.  From there, Rob was able to grow his business to what it has become today.  Hoop also sponsored Rob for membership 26 years ago, and for that Rob will always be grateful.

Jim Robinson met Hoop in the 1940’s when both Hoop and he were working for their respective fathers.  Jim mentioned a couple of flights that they took in Hoop’s plane.  One of which was up to Greenville, Maine to take Jim’s son to work at a camp up there.  When they got over the airport, they realized that it was a grass field.  Jim asked Hoop if he’d ever landed on grass, and Hoop said “no, but there’s a first time for everything.”  Years later, they flew up to Montreal to attend the World’s Fair, and while coming back landed in Burlington, Vermont to clear customs.  Since dusk was approaching, Jim asked Hoop whether he’d ever landed at Beverly at night, and Hoop said….

PDG Bud Curtis got up to tell about the time Hoop took a number of them to a district meeting in Andover.  John drove.  It was a miserable, cold, rainy night in November.  The presenter got going on a really long (read boring) story, and John shook his head, stood up and walked out.  They all thought he went to the restroom, but when he didn’t come back, they realized he had left, and left them stranded.  Luckily a woman from Marblehead was there, and gave them all a ride back to pick up their cars.

Finally John stood and told his own story.  He said it was what has guided him through life and Rotary.  When his father was on his deathbed and John was 17, his father told him:  “You’re here to serve the people.  Serve them any way they want, but you MUST make a profit.”  That advice is what has guided him through everything in life, in business, in Rotary both at the club and district level – in everything that made him a success.

Then everyone stood to give him a rousing ovation.

Here is a chance to help out a fellow Rotarian, and I am not kidding....

"Hey Brenda hope your tan is coming along well.  I was wondering if you could include this item in the next spoke. Looking to borrow a metal detector for a lost wedding ring.  My couch is lumpy & old. & of course you can use my name if ya like or use as a Stumper.  But I really do want to see if someone has one to borrow."

So, if you have a metal detector, after you pick yourself off the floor from laughing so hard, Bruce Whear is the person to speak with....
