Editors Note: It is with great sadness that we recognize the passing of fellow Rotarian Sandy Heaphy's husband. Our prayers and condolences go to her family.

Dear Fellow Rotarians, regretably I share the following information with you regarding the passing of Sandy Heaphy's husband.
William F. Heaphy Jr., 68, of Salem, beloved husband of Sandra M. (Morin) Heaphy died Saturday evening, March 28, 2009 in Salem Hospital surrounded by his family. Born in Salem, son of the late William F. Sr. and June (McGibney) Heaphy, he was raised and educated in Salem. Mr. Heaphy had been employed as a technician for many years at the former Bell Atlantic Telephone Company prior to his retirement. A life-long resident of the City of Salem, Bill was a communicant of the Immaculate Conception Church in Salem and was a member of the American Telephone Pioneers. In addition to his loving wife of 44 years, Bill is survived by his two daughters, Lisa Marie Palance and her husband, Thomas, of Ipswich and Tracy Ann Tuttle and her husband Christopher of Beverly; four grandchildren, Alyssa and Annabella Palance, Tyler and Cecelia Tuttle; one sister, Barbara Tobin and her husband James of Salem; a brother-in-law, Richard Morin and his wife Margaret of Beverly; several nieces and nephews. ARRANGEMENTS: His funeral service will be held from the O'Donnell Funeral Home, 46 Washington Sq., (at Salem Common), Salem, Wednesday at 9:15 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, Hawthorne Blvd., Salem. Relatives and friends invited. Visiting hours Tuesday 4 to 7. For more information, inquire at 978-744-2350.

There is a shortage of workers for mid-education level careers. Associate degrees will be in higher demand as the 55+ population increases over the next 30 years.
North Shore Community College helps those with English as a 2nd language, specializing in professional training for economic strength and personal growth.
FYI-
46% of all Freshmen begin at a community college, and many go on to higher degrees.
65% of new healthcare workers receive their training at a community college.
Overall, 220,000 North Shore residents have taken courses at North Shore Community College. The majority of students reside in Salem, Lynn, Beverly, Danvers and Gloucester.
North Shore Community College has sites in Beverly, Lynn and Danvers with 10,000 students. Areas of education include: healthcare, business, computer and engineering classes with certificate programs in the culinary arts, accounting, landscaping, etc. Also, there are 75 online courses with complete programs in Bachelor of Arts, web development and liberal arts.
Major emphasis under President Burton is to be active in the community, and partnered with regional school districts for outreach purposes.
North Shore Community College is proud to announce a new 60,000 sq. ft. “green” building at Danvers campus, thanks to state funding of $31.9 million.
North Shore Community College believes in “Helping those build new lives through education.”

Katie Krech, a NSCC student, spoke about her first exposure to Rotary via her grandfather who was a Rotarian living on the south shore. Katie attended the Phoenix School and Essex Aggie. She also went to Rotary Camp. She is involved in the Presidential scholarship program at North Shore Community College. Katie enjoys meeting with the college president and attending the North Shore Chamber breakfasts. In the fall, she is enrolling in the sports management program at Salem State College.
Tom Leonard spoke about the NSCC foundation stating that:
60% of students receive financial aid.
He noted the rise in unemployment has created a greater need for education.
Since 1985, the North Shore Community College Foundation has provided $1.5 million in scholarships to 2,100 students.
