SPEAKER/PRESENTER OF THE WEEK
Dr. Patricia Maguire, President
Salem State College
Salem State College began classes on September 2nd. The weather on the first day of the fall semester was great. Bright sunshine and warm weather. The college has approximately 6,100 full-time undergraduate students so far this year with 1,254 part-time students enrolled. The freshman class is slightly smaller this year with a higher number of transfer students enrolled. This is partly due to the economy and mostly because the college has such a great reputation. The economy plays a role because students who started out at more expensive schools are finding themselves transferring to Salem State for financial purposes. Graduate students are up 5% for a total of 2,500. The College also has approximately 500 international students from India, Africa China and Japan. The school provides graduate students with 50 degree programs to choose from. Salem State College takes pride in their sports teams. As a division 3 school, they compete very well with other schools within their conference. In fact, the Men's Basketball team made it to the Sweet 16 tournament for division 3. These sporting events are great for kids. In addition to sports, Salem State offers theatre arts and creative writing. For instance, they two plays coming up this fall.
Last Sunday Salem State rededicated their school of business in efforts to raise their goal amount of 7.5 million dollars. The dedication was a tremendous success. A former student and her husband donated 1 million dollars. Salem State College is currently building a new residents hall which will hold 525 students on their central campus. They also have plans to build a new library adjacent to their existing library and will be similar in size. The college recently purchased the Wear Valves and Controls building on Loring Avenue. A portion of the property will be the new home of the Rehearsal Hall for Music and the IT Department. Most of the construction work will done to the interior with a little work scheduled for the exterior.
Salem State is in the process of becoming Salem State University. Although this process is very difficult it will take time in order to be labeled a University. Along with heavy political and legislative requirements, the college must provide two doctorate programs. As a University, Salem State will attract strong faculty members and help their students and alumni with future possibilities. Salem State College is pleased to be a contributor to not just Salem but the entire North Shore.
