ANNOUNCEMENTS
Please take a moment to thank Ken Rothwell and Rob Lutts for sponsoring the very successful Salem Rotary Texas Hold'Em Tournament. The club raised $5,300.00 this year. $1,000.00 of the proceeds went to Polio Plus while the remainder went to scholarships. Congratulations to Bruce Whear who came in second place in the tournament.

The club needs to be represented at the District Foundation/Membership meeting on Thursday October 1, 2009. President elect and foundation and membership committee members are expected to attend. Please see President John to sign up.
If anyone is interested in volunteering for the Interact Club at Salem High School please see Liz Bradt. The Interact Club is an extension of Rotary at the High School. If interested, sit with Liz at next weeks meeting for lunch and she will provide you with what is expected.
All Rotarian's are invited to the Phoenix School in Salem at 89 Margin Street to witness the Act Club Inauguration of Officers. Tuesday September 29th at 10:30am. Please See Betsye Sargent for additional information.
President John will be launching another initiative to fight hunger. As you know, one of President John's main goals during his term is to tackle hunger in Salem. This program is titled "Change, to Change Lives". He is asking all Rotarian's to bring in your spare change from home and donate it to our fight hunger initiative. The members of the Royal Order of Turkey's will be collecting the change. It will then be taken to the free coin counter at the bank turned into cash and donated to the local food banks. REMEMBER, a $1.00 donation to a food bank provides them with $5.00 worth of food. Lets put our change to good use instead of it just sitting on your dresser or in a drawer somewhere.

SPEAKER/PRESENTER OF THE WEEK
Nelson Benton
Salem Evening News
Nelson has been in the newspaper industry for 37 years and stated that the Newspapers are not dead. Although there has been many changes over the years and many changes to come 104 million people read the newspaper on a daily basis. 90,000 people read the Salem News either by print or on-line. When it comes to pricing for advertising it differs between print and on-line. The Salem News publishes a quarterly magazine distributed in Marblehead. It provides a great opportunity for advertising.
The Salem News spends a lot of time and money fighting for documents pertained to a story. For instance, they spent a lot of time and money on the Hamilton Police training story. The Salem News also plays a big role in local politics. Nelson mentioned the Mayor race in Lynn and a couple key races in Beverly and Peabody. Politics on the North Shore should be very interesting in 2009 and 2010.
