As Christmas quickly approaches please bring in your spare change in next week for our 2nd collection of the Change to Change Lives initiative. Hunger remains a central problem in our community and anything you can donate will help a family in need. We collected nearly $600.00 on our first collection which went to the St. Joseph's Food Bank, so lets try to break the $600.00 mark this upcoming collection.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SALEM ROTARIANS
John Neely - December 12th
SPEAKER/PRESENTER OF THE WEEK
SALEM HIGH SCHOOL ROTC
Major David Flores
Cadet Major Zack Broughton
Major Flores is from New Mexico and the brother of 13 other brothers and sisters. He is of Native American and Mexican descent. Both his parents had no more than an elementary school education and worked mostly on farms while raising their 14 children. The working conditions in New Mexico were very difficult with most of his family working at a very young age. Major Flores dropped out of school in the 9th grade. Fortunately, the Marines accepted young men with no high school diploma. He was forced to work in an ice house for his first job in the Marines. His first Captain noticed potential and pushed him to finish High School. After high school he got his undergraduate degree and then was chosen by the Marines to attend BC Law School.
Once he completed Law School Major Flores worked in logistics and intelligence. He then went to the Naval Justice School to learn about Court Marshall's. He worked on high profile cases for the Marines as a prosecutor. After 24 years in the Marines Major Flores retired. He then decided to take a job at Beverly High School ROTC and for 6 years worked with Beverly Cadets. He then transferred to Salem High School where he has been for the past 3 years. When he took the job the school had approximately 30 Cadets and today there are over 120 Cadets.
The Salem HS ROTC program teaches its Cadets leadership and tactics that some fortune 500 companies use. The Cadets are also instructed to do things in the community like Toys for Tots, computer literacy program, and volunteer their time at homeless shelters. They also helped restore the deteriorating basketball court behind the high school. The Salem High School ROTC Program is prepares kids for college and does not actively recruit them to the military.
