SPEAKER OF THE WEEK

Kang Yu, the Assistant District Governor was at the meeting and offered to help clubs from the District level.  He introduced our District Governor, Peter Simonsen, to the group.

Peter said it was a pleasure to be at the meeting, and recognized John Hall.  Peter told a story of a time when he visited the Boston Rotoract Club.  He was asked to present some of the pins to the members.  One of the members was wearing a dress with spaghetti straps on it.  He asked his wife, Diane, to help him pin it on, and she said, "No."  So, Peter just handed the woman her pin and quickly sat down!

Peter is the first District Governor from the Hamilton/Wenham Club.  He praised all the work the Salem Club does locally and internationally.

He spoke about four areas of Rotary:

  • Foundation
  • Youth Services - Youth Exchange, RYLA, Interact, and Rotoract
  • Membership - there is a commission of 12 working to build membership
  • Public Relations

He said the district is helpful for training and for giving access to the Rotary world.  It works with PETS, Governor training , and District assembly.

The theme for Rotary International this year is "Light Up Rotary."  There are 34,567 Rotary clubs in the world, and there are 48 clubs in our district.  The goal for Rotary is to reach 1.3M members worldwide.  The Rotary Foundation goal is to reach $120M ($100 per member) this year.  Our district usually provides $200K + each year.  44 clubs have put in foundation goals for the year.

The District has a Club Visionary Program, which offers a 3 year plan for clubs to help with their individual organizations.  They have increased the technology and communications through website access at club level and Rotary International.  Club Runner and Club Central are two of the sites available to members for information about their particular club and Rotary International.

Some of the new ideas and goals for Rotary are:

  • Elderact Club - Swampscott and Marblehead Harbor clubs are sponsoring this and they have 30 members so far!
  • Satellite Clubs - where clubs may have meetings held at different hours (breakfast, evening) to accommodate members schedules.  This will hopefully build membership and create more service projects.  The goal for Rotary is to be the "best hours of the week!"  We are trying for 2,100 members in our district.
Some future events are:

  • The Polar Plunge, held on January 31st - Peter encourages all of us to participate!
  • The District 7930 Conference will be May 1-May 3, 2015 - The conference luncheon is planning on 300-400 attendees.  Friday night will be at the Harvard Club in Boston, Saturday will be a day of programs, Saturday night we will be celebrating Presidents in Salisbury.  The closing brunch will be at the Double Tree.
