FINES AND RECOGNITIONS

Viktoria Talebian went to the Patriots-Browns game at Gillette Stadium with friends and tailgated inside their car due to weather. The game was fun, but she was unimpressed by the feared O’Dell Beckham.

Rob Lutz went on a bike trip in South Carolina with his wife to escape Halloween. Jason Consalvo reminded him Halloween has yet to occur.

Jason Consalvo is escaping Halloween in Salem to experience Halloween at Disney World with his kids. Good luck! He also found “Hank the cat” is an excellent mouser.

Joe Amico went to see Jim’s 80 year old brother in Albuquerque, NM for possibly their last time. It snowed during their visit!

Gerrit Bradley visited with family in New York City and enjoyed the art and views from the Whitney Museum of Art in Chelsea.

SPEAKER OF THE WEEK

Carlene White, founder and president of the Service Dog Project, was introduced to us by Betsy Frost of the Ipswich Rotary Club. The Service Dog Project breeds and trains Great Danes to help veterans and others in need of mobility support because of balance issues from injury or illness. Betsy mentioned our District Governor, Joan Kelly Arsenault, who is the force behind our district raising $30,000 in funds (to be donated to the Service Dog Project), representing the expense of raising and training a Great Dane. Through the work of Rotary, a Great Dane named ‘Rabbit’ will be paired with Akayla, a local veteran in need of a support dog.

Videos of these amazing dogs were shown helping kids get to class or others explore the outdoors. Her dog, George, won the AKC’s service dog of the year award. Amazingly, to train these dogs there is no physical force employed – no “muscle training.” The reason for this is that the dogs need to be very sensitive to their person’s movements. In order to achieve a training bond, a puppy is fed by spoon after their name is called. These gentle giants eat seven cups of food a day and “sleeping is what they do best” says Carlene. The dogs have a working life of about 10 years, and she has placed 175 dogs.

The farm welcomes visitors every Sunday with a 12-4PM potluck. They have a good collection of volunteers, however because there are more female than male volunteers, when a man comes to the farm, he is first given a box of cookies and gives a treat to each dog. This helps the dogs get familiar with men.

You can watch the dogs at EXPLORE.ORG where many camera feeds around the farm are hosted, or visit SERVICEDOGPROJECT.ORG to learn more about the farm and how to volunteer.
