This week at rotary...

Jessica DH Barnett
Founder
Marblehead News Group

This week at Rotary we were joined by speaker Jessica DH Barnett, one of the founders of the Marblehead News Group. She is clearly a popular speaker as the staff at the Hawthorne Hotel had to once again bring in additional seating for this week's meeting to accommodate her guests. Jessica Barnett is one of the founders of the Marblehead News Group, Inc., d.b.a. The Marblehead Current. She is a faculty member in Salem State University's Department of Media and Communication. She is also President of the Rotary Club of Marblehead Harbor and a board member of The Marblehead Female Humane Society.

The local Marblehead newspaper, The Marblehead Reporter, like many smaller, local publications, shifted its focus to a more regional format. Three of the long-time editors joined this week's speaker along with New England AP Bureau Chief Ed Hall to create the Marblehead News Group. The Marblehead Current returned local journalist to Marblehead. Copies of the paper were distributed to Salem Rotarians.

The mission of the Marblehead News Group is to establish a values-based, non-profit, sustainable news publication with community-focused, reliable, objective and fair reporting by professional and ethical journalists delivered to every home and business in Marblehead. Their vision is to provide every Marblehead household and business with objective and fair Marblehead news, online and in print, overseen by respected, ethical, professional journalists through sustainable, non-profit model.

The online edition was launched in June of  2022 and the paper edition was launched in November of 2022. The goal was to get the online version up and running in time for local elections. The town, however, prefers a paper version so the print edition was launched. Ed Hall explained that the paper costs $3000 a week, not including payroll for three employees. The business model relies on advertising in the paper, which is also helped by donations and the goodwill from Marblehead residents.

They are grateful to the North of Boston Media Group, including the Salem News, for printing the Marblehead Current.

NAGLY and James Geissler sent a wonderful thank you note for our sponsorship of their recent Red Ball.

Recognition pins were given to Chris Casey for 15 years of service and John Fisher for 45 years of service to the Salem Rotary. Congratulations!

From the Committees:

The Scholarship Committee reported that we have 35 applicants. 18 were selected to be interviewed for scholarships. The scholarship luncheon is set for June 20. Rinus won an award from the CTE program at Salem High School.

A FINAL REMINDER to bring wine for the Spin the Bottle event at the Auction. Bottles can be left in Claire's office at the Hawthorne Hotel.

June 15 is this year's Senior Prom.

As the Rotary World Turns...

In his monthly message, District Governor Alexander Falk reminded Rotarians that May is Youth Services Month and encouraged everyone to donate to the District RYLA. It is also No Mo May, and Alexander reminded Rotarians to participate and get those signs in our yards!

Did you know that the Salem Rotary is part of Rotary Zones 28 and 32 (specifically Zone 32)? Find out more information about Rotary Zones 28 and 32 or join the In the Zone Facebook group. This month, Zone Director Drew Kessler sent a message to all to focus on enhancing participant experience - or how to make our members (as well as future members and anyone with whom we come in contact) come back wanting more!

The Rotary International Convention is coming up soon. The host city this year is wonderful Melbourne, Australia!! Register here for this amazing event down under!

ROTARIAN NEWS

Bob Pesce Appreciation Award

Bob Pesce was a distinguished CTE administrator here in Salem from 1960-1995. He was determined to allow every scholar to explore and develop their talents and interests to the highest possible level. His efforts, along with this year's award winner, have made a profound difference in the life of many scholars.

Congratulations to this year's winner of the distinguished Bob Pesce Award, Salem Rotary's Rinus Oosthoek

Happy Dollars
  • Bruce Whear was glad to attend the recent CTE awards celebration and recognized Rinus's award. He will be teaching kids soon as well as part of his improv career.
  • Chris Casey expressed his gratitude to the Marblehead Harbor club for supporting his daughter.
  • Liz Bradt was happy to announce that her daughter is off to Provincetown. She said something else about the trip but all attendees at this week's meeting agreed to keep it a secret. Sorry, but come to Rotary!
  • John Hall was excited to announce his daughter's upcoming 50th birthday!
  • Gerrit Bradley is lucky to be associated with his wife (in more ways than one) and her family, which recently was recognized by the Hartford Symphony for the impact of the family's impact of the city.
  • Jason Consalvo had a weekend full of baseball. His son completed his own cycle of being hit by a pitch, getting a walk, and getting a hit all in the same game.

DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION STATEMENT
At Rotary, we understand that cultivating a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture is essential to realizing our vision of a world where people unite and take action to create lasting change.

We value diversity and celebrate the contributions of people of all backgrounds, across age, ethnicity, race, color, disability, learning style, religion, faith, socioeconomic status, culture, marital status, languages spoken, sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity as well as differences in ideas, thoughts, values, and beliefs.

Recognizing that individuals from certain groups have historically experienced barriers to membership, participation, and leadership, we commit to advancing equity in all aspects of Rotary, including in our community partnerships, so that each person has the necessary access to resources, opportunities, networks, and support to thrive.

We believe that all people hold visible and invisible qualities that inherently make them unique, and we strive to create an inclusive culture where each person knows they are valued and belong.

In line with our value of integrity, we are committed to being honest and transparent about where we are in our DEI journey as an organization, and to continuing to learn and do better.
