SPEAKER OF THE WEEK

Ms. Ann Williams from the US Census Bureau was our speaker this week.  She is a Partnership Specialist in the New York regional office.

The census is mandated by the Constitution and was started in 1790 when Thomas Jefferson was President.

The number of people we count in each state determines how many seats in Congress each state will receive, as well as the amount of money for federal programs.  The information collected from the census is for statistical purposes only.  It is not share with other agencies, such as ICE, etc.

This year for the first time, the census can be completed online, or by telephone (available in 13 languages).

The process for the census will start in mid-March, and hopefully will be completed by the end of April.   95% of households will receive their invitation in the mail, 5% will receive their census when a census taker drops it off, and less than 1% will be counted in person by a census taker.

Salem hires about 100 people as enumerators.  This is a part-time job with flexible hours, paying $27.50/hour.

For more information, visit 2020census.gov
