SPEAKER OF THE WEEK
Bob Conley introduced Dennis Nelson, a financial planner from Marblehead, who spoke to the Club about Social Security. Dennis reminded us that the pool of people drawing Social Security benefits was rapidly expanding. He pointed out two recent changes in Social Security laws:
The file and suspend option was no longer available.
New restrictions on claims for spousal benefits.
He told us that there was a common misconception that the Social Security system was going broke, when, in fact, it is supported by a 3 trillion-dollar trust fund. However, he did indicate that politicians would be considering options to protect the future solvency of the system by either increasing the payroll tax or reducing benefits.
Dennis concluded by answering a number of questions from Club members.
